Celebrate Day of the Girl And Let Girls Learn By Watching “We Will Rise”

In honor of October 11th being International Day of the Girl Child, CNN International will be presenting a special documentary “We Will Rise: Michelle Obama’s Mission to Educate Girls Around the World”  The documentary will depict interviews and highlights of First Lady Michelle Obama, Meryl Streep, Freida Pinto, and CNN journalist Isha Sesay’s travels through Morocco and Liberia as part of her Let Girls Learn global initiative.

Let Girls Learn is Michelle Obama’s initiative with the U.S Peace Corps to bring awareness and change to the estimated 62 million girls around the world who do not have access to an education. The Peace Corps is a volunteer government agency that works in rural towns across more than 60 countries around the world.  Volunteers are trained to work along side the local community on sustainable development projects that empower host country nationals. Morocco has been a Peace Corps host nation since the organization’s founding in 1963, receiving over 4,830 Peace Corps Volunteers  since then.

Here are a few Project Soar girls enjoying the library. In Morocco, enrollment is lowest among rural girls at only 26% attendance after age 11 compared to 79% of rural boys who continue to secondary school. Photo by Brenda Garcia Jaramillo (IG: @Bgjaramillo), former Project Soar Field Manager.

Here at Marrakech Confidential, we are personally very excited because the film will feature Marrakech’s own local girl empowering NGO, Project Soar Morocco, founded by humanitarians & hoteliers Maryam Montague & Chris Redecke. Hanane Amyour, a thirteen year old regularly attending Project Soar girl will be interviewed by Meryl Streep on her experience with Project Soar, being a part of their Be Girl initiative which helps girls stay in school by providing them reusable sanitary pads, and why she values the power of education.
